New character gets new infopost! WHOO!

Meet Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina, code-name: Magik. Sorceress Supreme of Limbo, apprentice to Dr. Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth. Answers to Illyana Rasputin because Americans don't understand how names work. Her friends can call her Yana. She....doesn't have many friends.

(Yes, I apped another traumatized, sarcastic, blonde X-Man. SHOCKING.)

What is this 'Marvel' that is your canon?

Oh gods. How to explain Marvel's X-Universe comics.

You've all met Emma Frost, my other blonde bitchy mutant. Emma is from Marvel's main universe, 616. Illyana is from... somewhere to the right and straight on 'til morning of that, in a tiny pocket-universe known as a "What If?" single issue. So, pardon me while I plagiarize a bit from my old app for the divine Miss Frost to get us started for the parts that overlap:

Illyana Rasputina, codename Magik, comes from the same branch of the Marvel family as the X-Men/New Mutants, which falls under the mutant umbrella. The important thing to know about this universe is that it is like ours in every way, except for one tiny little thing: there are people known as 'mutants', who are considered by some to be the next evolution of mankind. A mutant is an individual who possesses a genetic twist called the X-gene that gives superhuman abilities. Mutants are members of the subspecies Homo sapiens superior, an evolutionary offshoot of homo sapiens. Powers cover a wide range of abilities: teleportation, telepathy, telekinesis, flight, energy projection, healing (of self or others), super strength, enhanced senses, and enhanced agility are just a few of the various mutations we see in the Marvel Universe. Mutations can also sometimes entail a minor to major change in physical appearance from the human norm - wings, gills, a tail, fur, altered skin color, etc.

Mutants began to increase in population post-WWII, although they weren't in the public awareness until "this" decade.* Unfortunately, this 'outing' brought with it the usual bigotry and xenophobia that minority groups tend to face, and there is a great deal of anti-mutant sentiments in the Marvel Universe. This is the world Illyana faces: one where she and her siblings are hated just for their genetics, despite all three of them being 'passing' and having no immediately visible signs of their mutations in daily life.

Illyana, however, has a bit more of a problem than your average mutant. You see, THIS Illyana is not the one from 616. Nor is she time-displaced. Much (more on that later). You see, her timeline is congruent with that of mainstream X-Men riiiiiight up until she escapes from Limbo. She's from a one-shot series called "What If?," which belongs to the main 616 continuity riiiiiight up until it doesn't.

*Recently a Marvel editor tried to claim that all of Marvel Comics has happened in the last ten years. I laughed so hard I almost fell off the couch.

So, who is Illyana?

Illyana Rasputin is sixteen years old, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She's small for her age, a result of malnutrition and abuse she suffered for almost a decade, but she's spent over the last year recovering (and eating anything she can get her hands on) so she's not dangerously thin anymore. She's pretty as a picture, and when she makes an effort not to look like a feral hobo child, she's downright angelic-looking.

Unless you piss her off. Then she's got horns, fangs, a tail, and sometimes hooves and sometimes goat-legs instead of humanoid feet. It depends how much she's lost control. That's Darkchilde. You don't want to meet Darkchilde/Darkchylde/however it's being spelled this week.

Both forms are Illyana. Neither is an illusion or an 'alternate' form, they're both just HER. It's a long story.

Personality-wise, well, we all know I have a type.

Illyana is sarcastic, has trust issues, is highly intelligent, defensive, slightly feral (it's getting better), loves pastrami, has a bit of a violent streak, and can be impulsive. She's got a big heart, and desperately, desperately, wants to be GOOD, but there's a fuckton of emotional damage hiding it. There's a good dose of PTSD in there, for Reasons, but over a year living in New York has helped a bit, as she's been getting therapy.

Left to her own devices, Illyana tends to wear baggy jeans, a t-shirt or long-sleeve shirt, and a hoodie. She likes feeling/looking anonymous. If she's going into a dangerous situation, she may be wearing a very fancy cape that looks suspiciously like one owned by a particular Sorcerer Supreme.

Thanks to Marvel's sliding time scale of doom, I've decided she's coming to Fandom from the early 2000s. So, she'd have been young enough when kidnapped to not really know how to use computers, and it hasn't exactly been a focus of hers since returning from Limbo. She has a cell phone, but it's, like, a Nokia from 2003. Someone will need to teach her about smartphones.

Great, another mutant. So what can she do?

So, Illyana's mutant power is teleportation. Specifically, she can create what she calls Stepping Disks/Teleportation Disks. They're interdimensional in nature, functioning much like the portal system that serves Fandom High. Currently, however, bopping around a city is the extent of her range. Eventually she'll be able to hop continents, planets, and galaxies and move through time and space -- yes, time travel included -- but at this point unless she wants a stop-over in Limbo (she doesn't), she has to keep the distance short. Unless it's needed for a plot, and then it might be dire enough to risk a Limbo side-trip. However, she'd prefer to avoid that (as would I).

However, Illyana's also spent seven years in Limbo as the captive of a demon, studying dark magic, and now a year and a half studying every other kind of magic with Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange. See, Illyana is currently, technically, Limbo's Sorceress Supreme after defeating Belasco, but, well, she doesn't want the job. She'd be perfectly happy to never ever go to Limbo ever again. Instead, she's being trained to take over for Strange as Earth's SS, so he can retire.

What does this mean? It means Illyana is a WMD of dark magic, which she desperately tries not to use, because she doesn't want to risk losing her soul completely and opening the doorway for the Elder Gods to invade Earth. Which is fairly reasonable, imho. To anyone with the ability to sense magic, demonic influence, or hell dimensions, she's basically a screaming airhorn on your radar. Can't miss her. She is, however, strangely resistant to telepathy, so you won't be able to peek into her thoughts easily.

Strange has been trying to teach her creation magic, to balance it out, as well as everything else. Illyana's a quick study, picking up everything else like a happy academic sponge, but creation magic, when you've been raised to darkness and have bits of soul corrupted by evil elder gods is... hard.

Illyana can perform a variety of spells: summon her Soul Staff, astral project, sense magic and magical presences, defensive enchantments, create protective amulets, energy manipulation, beginner offensive (non-dark) magic. Her creation magic is.... Iffy.

She's also well versed in lethal hand-to-hand, thanks to an alternate demonic version of Kitty Pryde, and has been learning non-lethal combat from Wong and Strange. Killing is always going to be easier for her, thanks to her darker instincts -- everything is a weapon, and she can kill a dude using a broom -- but Illyana can manage a spar or self-defense without too much accidental bloodshed. Usually. She doesn't want to hurt people, but she will if she feels she doesn't have another choice, or if Darkchilde is too close to the surface.

Illyana's weapon of choice is her Soul Staff. Yes, you read that right. Soul Staff, not Soul Sword, because we're in an AU. It is the first thing she ever managed to create using creation magic. It is the purest expression of her soul and her will. She can summon and dismiss it with ease, and it disrupts magic. It's also a weapon, because SHE is a weapon, and it is utterly lethal to sorcerers who aren't her.

Seriously. She stabbed Belasco through the chest with the NON-POINTY-END and pretty much killed him instantly. If you have magic, do not touch the Happy Fun Staff.

So, she's not from 616 Marvel. What's her canon?

She's from this amazing SINGLE ISSUE, which is all you really need to read to know where she's coming from. "What If? Magik Became Sorcerer Supreme?" Which, tbh, is a bit of an exaggeration. There's multiple timelines where she becomes the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth and not just Limbo, this is just one, focused on her apprenticeship. You can read it for free here

Oh no, it's YOU

Look, I gave you nice people with Minako, Ada, and Yang. I need a return to sarcasm.

☢ Answers to Ahddie, Ahds, Hey You, and almost anything else directed at me. If you take my Lucky Charms, I'll cut you.

☢ Library muppet, theatre geek, fake-ginger, plays too much D&D.  A little bit nuts and a professional enabler.

☢ I live with my cats (Circe & Toph) in the land of CST. My house is filled with books and comics!

☢ I tend to lose my shoes. While at work. No, I don't know how I do it either.

☢ My availability is a bit odd since I work multiple jobs, but you can find me on the FH Discord or over gchat, and I'll answer if I can.

☢  Also plays: Ghanima Atreides, John Constantine, Yang Xiao Long, Ada Miller, Aino Minako, Surreal SaDiablo, Emma Frost.

TL;DR - Teenage teleporting mutant sorceress raised in a hell dimension gave Xavier's the finger and ran off to be raised by Dr. Strange.

Hello! Hearing an airhorn here, just FYI. :)

Though as another reluctant denizen of Hell and using its magic, it's probably mutual? And once he figures out she's just in sort of the same boat and not an intentional danger, the worst he'll probably do is annoy her by trying to white knight at her.
